Hawking

Stephen Hawking was born on January 8, 1942, and, by that feat, managed to match, twice, odds of the magnitude of one-to-thee hundred and sixty five: He was born on the exact 300th anniversary of the death of Galileo Galilei (2/15/1564-1/8/1642) and he passed away on 3/14/2018, the 139th anniversary of the birth of Albert Einstein (3/14/1879-4/18/1955)
Stephen Hawking and Carl Sagan were, single-handed, responsible for making science and the Universe approachable to billions of human beings who would otherwise not had the opportunity to phrase the fundamental questions: What, Where and Why Are we? Questions without which existence would be meaningless.
For as long as our point of view is anthropomorphic, expecting the universe to conform to our experience, rather than comprehending our existence as a co-substantial part of a wondrous and magnificent Universe, we will not find the "wings" by which to fly in the heavens where Stephen and Carl soared, and will continue to soar.
Spacetime is so much more, and different, than what our biology and central nervous system can grasp. But we may always try. As they did. More importantly, share it with others. As they did.

Hawking Quotes:

On the universe...
"It would not be much of a universe if it wasn't home to the people you love."

On scientific discoveries...
"I wouldn't compare it to sex, but it lasts longer."

On persistence...
"However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don't just give up."

On life...
"So remember, look at the stars and not at your feet."
"Never give up work. Work gives you meaning and purpose and life is empty without it"
"If you are lucky enough to find love, remember it is there and don't throw it away"

On intelligence...
"I would never claim I am the most intelligent person in the world. People who boast about their IQ are losers."

On living with a disability...
"My advice to other disabled people would be, concentrate on things your disability doesn't prevent you doing well, and don't regret the things it interferes with. Don't be disabled in spirit, as well as physically"

On an imperfect world...
❝Without imperfection, you or I would not exist❞

On space...
"May you keep flying like superman in microgravity."
"I believe that the long-term future of the human race must be in space. The human race shouldn't have all its eggs in one basket, or on one planet."

On staying cheerful...
"Life would be tragic if it weren't funny"

On euthanasia...
"The victim should have the right to end his life, if he wants. But I think it would be a great mistake. However bad life may seem, there is always something you can do, and succeed at. While there's life, there is hope"

On artificial intelligence...
"The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race. It would take off on its own, and re-design itself at an ever increasing rate... Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn't compete, and would be superseded"

On the possibility of contact between humans and aliens...
"I think it would be a disaster. The extraterrestrials would probably be far in advance of us. The history of advanced races meeting more primitive people on this planet is not very happy, and they were the same species. I think we should keep our heads low"

On space colonies...
"I don't think the human race will survive the next 1,000 years, unless we spread into space. There are too many accidents that can befall life on a single planet. But I'm an optimist. We will reach out to the stars"

On the end of the universe...
"It will take about a thousand million million million million years for the Earth to run into the sun, so there's no immediate cause for worry!"

On God...
"God may exist, but science can explain the universe without the need for a creator."
"The scientific account is complete. Theology is unnecessary."

On women...
"My [physician assistant] reminds me that although I have a PhD in physics, women should remain a mystery."

On humanity...
"We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special"

On why the universe exists...
"If we find the answer to that, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason - for then we would know the mind of God"
